All About Zips Criminally Pretty (Fanny) - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 1. Fanny is in foal to Mr Cool Hand Luke.
She is due on Jan 17, 2010.
2. Give us Fanny's statistics, please. Fanny was born April 18, 1999. She is 16hh. Fanny is in foal to Mr Cool Hand Luke. and this will be her first foal. Fanny is 2004 and 2007 Reserve World Champion and eight time World Top Ten Winner. Her dam is Canadian National Champion Skippers Lucy May and her sire is our own Supreme Champion and 2003 World's Best Appaloosa Zip Me Impressive

3. What is Fanny's personality like? Fanny is great. She is relaxed and quiet. She has a nice hip and a great personality. She is calm and even-tempered, like our other mares. That's important to us for breeding purposes to pass along a nice disposition, but also for ease of handling - a horse is a big animal and it costs the same to keep a cranky horse as a nice one....so you might as well make sure you buy a nice one! She is a multiple reserve world champion and has had one foal Trace a 2008 colt, who also has show points.

4. Can you tell us about the foal's sire (father)? Mr Cool Hand Luke. is a three time World Champion. He is owned by Larrabee Appaloosas.

5. How will you know Fanny is about to give birth? Since Fanny is a maiden mare we don't know if she will show all the typical signs of foaling. The signals we watch for include her tail cocked continuously to one side; pacing; her udder very full and waxed on the teats; getting smooth and elongated under her tail; the baby moving back into position giving her a more "cylindrical" appearance; and the ligaments on either side of her tail feeling soft and loose in preparation for foaling. In addition she may be not as hungry the day before or day of foaling; she may drip milk from her udder a few hours before delivery, and she may lay down and get up frequently. Her water will break and then the foal should be born within one hour - but sometimes as quickly as 15 minutes, so watch close!

6. Does the light in the foaling stall bother Fanny? No, the light is from a low-watt light bulb. We enhance the lighting of the picture via the computer software so that you can see things better at night. Lights are off during the day. We will also turn off the lights after Fanny foals and the baby is up and nursing vigorously. (about two to three hours after foaling) Mother and baby will be in natural light every day, whether they are in the barn or outside in their paddock.

7. What kind of technical equipment do you use to support the BarnCams? We have six cameras in and outside the barn all devoted to supporting the technical side of the BarnCams. We have four wireless cameras and one video camera pointed at the horses we are featuring each day. An older, wired system runs from the foaling barn to the TVs in the house so that we can do hourly and then half-hour checks at night without running down to the barn. We have three dedicated servers to handle all the traffic - it has been incredible! In addition, we will use a hand-held camera for our BarnBuddy Club members when Fanny foals.

We are all ready for our two foals coming in a couple of weeks.  Fanny is progressing nicely and it looks like she will foal as expected. Roxy actually seems more uncomfortable though she is due much later. Fanny really has been eating over the past few weeks and we have been feeding her up to try to get her fat and happy for foaling. This year she is supposed to have  filly. Trace will be a full brother to her from 2 years ago. He has turned out very nice and I can’t wait to see a female version. LOL We will start doing udder pictures and put straw in the stall the first of the year. Don’t forget to enter our foaling and naming contests if you haven’t already.

Thanks for watching,

Fanny has put her feeder down on the ground.  shock

She is a little bit restless this evening. I have seen her kicking against her udder, pawing with her foreleg and now rolling around in her stable and up again.  wink3

Seems she is positioning her foal.  whistle

I wish Bill would publish some udder photos of her on the BarnBuddy website, but today he's not at home.  iwant

So let's wait and see ...  tv

Fanny is lying down on the ground. Is she sleeping  zzz or not?  hmmm

Sometimes she is looking at her belly, but she is too calm to foal.  whistle

Maybe she needs a good nap ...  zzz

I watch her every day and as often and as long as possible, but no changes at all. She's eating her hay or she's outside.

 ponyeating

Bill has written on the BarnBuddyBoard there are no changes and her udder is not much more than before, but he will make a snapshot as soon as possible.  whistle

Can't await to see her foal, should be a filly ...  wink3

Not much new going on with Fanny. Not a lot of changes in her udder or body. I think she is going to stay pretty close to her due date.

Fanny is progressing nicely a bigger udder again today, but still a while away until she foals. She is pretty hairy still also, which I am suprised about as she has never been out in this really cold weather. It just goes to show you that it is not only cold, but the changes in season that causes the hair to grow. Anyway she is still not blowing her coat or anything yet.

We survived the snowstorm, and headed out together (Susan and I) for a short business trip she needed to do. It’s a good thing we had planned to do this together as the traveling was a bit tricky. We are there safe adn sound and return tomorrow, Saturday. If fanny was advancing in any way I would have stayed home, but you will see marla in the barn today watching over things. No udder development to speak of, but Fanny did start blowing her coat just today, and that is a sign of things to come. So exciting!

Thanks for watching,
S/B

I heard from Marla yesterday that everybody is doing well at home. Fanny is really blowing her coat. Now and before long she is going to have a filly by her side, which hopfully looks like Trace, be totally shed out. Ok maybe I am being a little too optimistic. Just a healthy foal would be nice.

  Fanny Update

Hi Buddies, we are home and Bill is working at the barn trying to catch up on things. I told him to get a quick night’s sleep first but he is doing it the other way around! Fanny is restless and kickiing at her belly quite a bit but her udder does not look ready. She is also pushing her hay around and that typically does not last very long! We’ll give her a good brushing in the morning and see how things are progressing. Won’t be long now….

Thanks for watching,
S/B

Fanny is really loving being brushed. I am trying to spend a little more time than normal as I recall last year she was a little cranking with me after foaling and I want to feel real comfortable in there with me before then to try to prevent that this year. I will be putting the straw in when we see wax, but so far her udder isn’t even full.

Meanwhile back at the ranch Fanny is progressing nicely. Her udder is getting bigger and she has stopped pigging out like she used to. A week or so ago, no matter how much hay I would feed her she would finish every bite. Now she is leaving a little almost everyday. The weather also is starting to warm up which the horses are just loving.

Fanny is hanging in there. I cleaned her stall last night and decided to put shavings in rather than straw as she doesn’t seem close enough yet. Who knows maybe Roxy will foal before her as she looks much wider than Fanny right now. Neither of them have much udder development and I will start posting Roxy’s udder tonight.

Thankfully Fanny has taken it easy on me and is still not ready to foal yet. I have been so busy that I might have missed her foaling, had she been ready. Her udder has not changed much over the past couple days and she seems a little less uncomfortable than she was. She has stopped shedding out and is starting to eat more again.  I still think we are a number of days away, and now I am all caught up.

Well Fanny sure tried to fake us out. I see she caught you buddies also as someone posted the high alert. We were watching from the beginning from the house and then Marla came to ride and she called us and said she thought she was ready. We all ran down to the barn and after many rolls and kicks, nothing….Such is the life of a mare owner. I still do not think she is ready, but she sure did look ready. Her udder is still not big enough I don’t think. Under her tail doesn’t look ready yet either, but who knows for sure. We did wrap her tail, put the halter on and put down some straw. I will be watching all night, just in case.

Thanks for watching,
S/B

Fanny looks very interesting!  thumbsup

She is breathing heavy, goes up and down a lot and does some rolls.  surprise

I am not shure if she will foal soon or if she is repositioning the foal and has some first pressures.  whoknows

Now she is lying down again and it seems to me as if she is doing some short naps to collect all her energy to foal soon.  zzz

Can't await to see the newborn foal. Good luck for a safe and healthy foaling!
