02 - 02 - 2010 Little Luna Posted by: admin in Uncategorized http://barnblog.com/appaloosas/No, that isn’t her chosen name yet, just a favorite children’s book title “Stella Luna” that I was reminded of by some of the suggested names we are considering. The vet exam today was very good. We don’t have her IgG test results back yet, but she is certainly nursing very well. Fanny was the perfect mother – on a loose lead, she just watched over the vet who does his exam by laying the foal down, and only a few soft nervous nickers gave anything away that she was the least bit upset. First, the baby. She had all great measures for temp, respiration, heart, eyes, etc. She was vigorous and strong, so must be getting plenty of milk although Fanny’s udder is on the small side. The vet just thought she was drinking a lot! Nice straight legs and very handsome conformation. So far Bill has only noticed mottled skin on the little girl, so we need one of the three other App characteristics to magically appear – coat pattern, striped hooves, or white sclera. It does not loo like she has the sclera, so……hopefully some day soon we will find a few white hairs on her rump and they will multiply like bunnies! Fanny was amazingly fit and not even a tear after the tough delivery. Bigger foal, two weeks late – and the rough pulling didn’t do any damage. The vet said there was some very typical bruising and she looks great. She also has all good vitals and was calm and accommodating about the guys handling her baby. Good girl!! Thsi new vet I am lking. He believes less is more, and does not give a shot to clean out the mare, nor penecillin to the foal as a safety measure. He talked about studies that show it may do more harm than good, and from a customer’s standpoint, he is also advocating a less invasive – and less expensive! – way to go. Very different than past vets who wanted to do everything, all the time. Here is a little video of her … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTWbRdkXKtA

http://www.eboards4all.com/993169/messages/9822.htmlLittle Miss Made-You-Wait Has Arrived!Posted by s/b on January 30, 2010 at 00:42:06: Hi Buddies, Susan here. Well, it wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t textbook. It wasn’t even fun, I was so worried for awhile there. But now that it is over I can take my Advil and a deep breath and admire our newest little gal on the farm. She is very tall, colored like Fanny but no evident spots, with a huge star on her beuatiful head. She is very active and Mom and Baby are doing great together, talking softly back and forth and she has been exploring for the milk pretty energetically. All is well.
When Fanny finally laid down, Drew and I already had our coats on to go to the barn. He was pretty excited and so was I. Fanny’s water broke at 9:15 so we knew the time we had to work with. Fanny’s first foal, Trace, took a long time in coming, and the pattern continued with this one. Fanny just does not push. She has serious contractions, you can see her sides heaving and she is quivering, but she won’t lay down and really work at it. Once we determined that the baby was in the right position with two feet sticking out and I felt a nose just behind but inside, I thought we should give her some time – 20 or 30 minutes – to try to deliver it all by herself. It is not our practice to pull foals, I think Mother Nature has a pretty good thing going and we should let it happen whenever possible. But after about a half hour Fanny had made very little progress and was getting tired. If she gave up completely I did not think I could pull the foal all by myself without contractions and some pushing to help it along. So I grabbed the feet and pulled down and out to try to get the head past the critical point. The legs are wet and slippery of course and my hands are just not what they used to be – I can’t even open a pickle jar, I give it to the kids to wrangle! There was a point at which I really did get fearful for ten minutes or so, thinking that maybe I just wasn’t strong enough or my grip wasn’t firm enough to get the job done. That was scarey, but once we got the head out I knew Fanny could finish with a little help from her friends Then she laid down up against the wall and appeared to be totally spent. Since her hindquarters were near the door and she seemed to not want to move at all, Drew grabbed one leg and I grabbed the other and we together delivered the foal completely. The filly was breathing well and active from the get-go, so that was a big relief. I don’t know how long it took the filly to stand, maybe a Buddy noted the time of birth and standing? She seemed to stand quite quickly. I did find the milt, Gail, and this time it was bloody bright red through and through and very small, I’ve never seen that before. That made us watch Fanny with concern as she was still laying in the corner spot and flat-out, did not want to get up. That’s very odd, usually the mare kind of jumps up and the cord breaks with that motion. In this case, Drew and I broke the cord when we pulled the foal out, so I guess he’s an Uncle or something After quite a while, Fanny passed the placenta while laying down, another first for us. She was really quite exhausted. But we needed to see if she was truly OK and so all it took was a handful of grain in her bucket and a little clucking encouragement for her to clamber to her feet. She and the filly seem really close already, like Frosty and Roxy and their foals do, so it looks really good. Bill and Joe walked in from Joe's band concert as things were settling down, and they got to see her stand and nurse for the first time. She is a smart and big and active one – but of course, she is technically already two weeks old! LOL Thanks, Buddies for all your support and well wishes.

Update on Fanny's filly "Luna" http://www.barnbuddy.net/bbs/Posted by s/b (75.86.220.71) on February 14, 2010 at 23:38:25: Buddies - say a little prayer for Luna. We are calling the vet. She has been rolling over and over for no apparent reason. Gets right up but then flops down again - too strange to ignore, can't sleep if we do. Help ia on the way; Bill is at the barn, Posted by susan (75.86.220.71) on February 14, 2010 at 23:44:49: In Reply to: Buddies - say a little prayer for Luna. Vet on the phone said he's seen this behavior before, maybe stomach ulcers. We didn't take the time to question him, just wanted him to get here. Posted by susan (75.86.220.71) on February 15, 2010 at 00:31:08: Vet is going to administer Buscapan (sp) to see if it is simple gas colic. Will need to move Fanny and foal to separate stalls across the aisle as Fanny is very upset with Luna not right. Sorry no cams in those stalls I will try to keep you posted. Thanks for prayers. He will put a tube into her stomach and give her oil - hihgly unlikely it is a blockage since her diet is 100% milk at this point, but we are throwing everything at her to try to turn this around. As long as we keep Luna near her, Fanny is being exceptional. She may just be tired from all the thrashing around and not really slowing down. Next we will treat gastric ulcers and tube her, trying to cover all the bases. Feb 15 2010 Belly Luna By Administrator and has no comments yet. http://barnbuddy.net/wordpress/Thanks, Buddies, for caring about Little Luna. She was fine at 10:15 whenwe came up to the house, and then when we viewed that camera at 11:30 while we were watching Roxy, we saw her unusual behavior. In the course of about ten minutes, she went from rolling a bit, to trying to stay on her back with her four legs up in the air. We checked her in person and she was obviously in pain and starting to writhe constantly. We called the vet and he came right from a restaurant to help Luna. He thought it could be one of three things: gas colic (easy to treat), stomach ulcers some foals are born with or develop suddenly around the time of the foal heat and scours, (expensive and time-consuming to treat, but recovery is likely) or impacted or tortion colic, where surgery is not recommended or often successful for a young foal and the outcome is not good. The vet administered a fast-acting drug by injection that did not do the trick. So on to the other possibilities. Pain killers made her less stressed, and we tubed her and also administered GastroGard. If we see oily discharge soon we will know she is not impacted or twisted and that would be a relief. But the vet really doesn’t think it’s that. The stomach ulcers will require pain management and twice-daily medication for 30 days to heal, but they will heal. That is also expensive, but what are you gonig to do? Poor little girl, she was hurting so much. The vet says it is just dumb luck that occasionally a foal gets these ulcers. It is not automatically a lifelong thing, and we are hopeful this is a passing issue. So we will be watching Roxy AND Luna tonight.
