No, that isn’t her chosen name yet, just a favorite children’s book title “Stella Luna” that I was reminded of by some of the suggested names we are considering. The vet exam today was very good. We don’t have her IgG test results back yet, but she is certainly nursing very well. Fanny was the perfect mother – on a loose lead, she just watched over the vet who does his exam by laying the foal down, and only a few soft nervous nickers gave anything away that she was the least bit upset. First, the baby. She had all great measures for temp, respiration, heart, eyes, etc. She was vigorous and strong, so must be getting plenty of milk although Fanny’s udder is on the small side. The vet just thought she was drinking a lot! Nice straight legs and very handsome conformation. So far Bill has only noticed mottled skin on the little girl, so we need one of the three other App characteristics to magically appear – coat pattern, striped hooves, or white sclera. It does not loo like she has the sclera, so……hopefully some day soon we will find a few white hairs on her rump and they will multiply like bunnies!

Fanny was amazingly fit and not even a tear after the tough delivery. Bigger foal, two weeks late – and the rough pulling didn’t do any damage. The vet said there was some very typical bruising and she looks great. She also has all good vitals and was calm and accommodating about the guys handling her baby. Good girl!! Thsi new vet I am lking. He believes less is more, and does not give a shot to clean out the mare, nor penecillin to the foal as a safety measure. He talked about studies that show it may do more harm than good, and from a customer’s standpoint, he is also advocating a less invasive – and less expensive! – way to go. Very different than past vets who wanted to do everything, all the time.

Here is a little video of her …

I heard back from the woman in Germany, she wants more pictures of Angel before she makes her decision and she might want a couple more x rays. She said she will talk to her husband and let us know.

Thanks for watching,

We are still working with the woman in Germany. She is asking for more info on Angels conformation. It is hard to tell with Angel being so hairy right now. I will be sending a couple more pictures which should help. The farrier will also be here tomorrow morning and do Angel, Checkers, Annie and maybe one more.

Thanks for watching,

  Good things come

Well good things come to those who wait right? At about 11am today Roxy finally had her foal. I was actually in the barn waiting for the vet so that we could breed Annie and Frosty. About fifteen minutes before he came Roxy paced a little and then I saw the sack coming. First two black legs and then a black head. I was a little worried as when the head was half out she got up and laid down again. Before long the foal was out. She was up against the back wall so I went back to make sure there was enough room. I recorded the entire thing and will post if for those that missed it. There was one glaring problem with the video. When I was helping with the foal, my pants were just a little too low for public viewing. Let’s just say the plumber in me would be proud. Any ways I need to review the tape a little before I post it. Maybe next time I should put a belt in the foaling kit, just in case. Anyway the foal was now out and I turned it over to see the umbilical cord and I noticed an udder. Now Dr. Schmidt had checked Roxy at 4 months and said that she would be having a colt. I checked again under her tail and sure enough a girl. I will have to call Dr. Schmidt and razz him. She looked solid black when she came out, but as she is drying you can se more and more color on her blanket. I also gave her an enema right away as both vets recommend that to help them nurse. Over the next hour or two she nursed alot in the back corner of the stall. I got a little worried until I called Dr. Geiche and he said if the foal likes the corner put the mare there and see what happens. I did that and in no time she drank. I have backed Roxy up one more time on the other side and she drank there too. So far so good. Thanks for watching, S/B

We also heard back today from the woman in Germany and she has decided to buy Angel. We are both so excited  as this is our first horse going to Europe, though we have had Zippy foals born there before. Angel won’t leave for a while as they want to wait for the temperatures to warm up a bit and then she has some quarantine period before she ships over there. We will keep you posted as we progress.

Tomorrow Angel will get all her official papers done so she can leave for Germany at the end of the month. I will be putting her in for the last week to get her used to being alone for the trip.  We of course will also work on trailer loading before then. She goes to Germany by way of Oklahoma and I am not sure how long she will be there.

Thanks for watching,

I started the morning off today by taking some new pictures of Angel for her new owner. Yvonne in Germany is so excited and so are we about her big trip. It was a little foggy today so the pictures I think will look pretty cool once I get them all uploaded.

Marla is taking care of the horses while I am gone. She is spending extra time working with Angel and Spanky. Angel before her trip and Spanky in preperation for the Midwest horse fair that will be here before we know it. The weather this weekend in Wisconsin is supposed to be bad, but hopefully she can work them in the arena and start to get Spanky really halter broke and Angel all cleaned up.

Ok finally I will be home today and be able to get back in the swing of things for a while. Angel is leaving today for Oklahoma on her way to Germany. I will miss her leaving, but Marla will be there to make sure everything goes well. I am going to have her try to video tape it so I can show all you buddies. Marla gave her a bath yesterday and spent alot of time brushing her this morning. She is looking really good. The shipper should come around noon. I get home around 3pm. I can’t wait, I have been goone too long.

Well I uploaded the video to the website of Angel. It was not the greatest trailer load ever, but having never been loaded before I think it was pretty good. I had planned on working with her when I got back in town, but with the shipper moving the date up we had no chance to practice. As you can see from the video Angel is very laid back so before long she was up and in the trailer.

A little off
Posted by: appaloosas in Uncategorized

We had a busy last couple weeks. Horse wise we had Angel head off to Germany and we had Trace head over to Missouri. Trace is going to a really nice home where he will be a stallion and be ridden often to work cattle and other interesting things. They even sometimes ride to town on their horses. Pretty cool. As for Angel she went to Oklahoma first and then after a month quarentine she was on her way to Germany. The trip took a little longer because of the Volcano in Europe. The owner got an even better deal as she bought before the Euro went down.  Other news to come will be the weaning of the two foals from this year and gelding Buddy. We havn’t told him yet of course, LOL but it will be next week.

We also got off of our barns painted and back into shape. Well not all of them. The old outhouse had a little issue when the tree fell over next to it. It pulled out of the ground and is now resting a little sideways. The birds don’t seem to mind.

Thanks for watching,
S/B

Drying out?
Posted by: appaloosas in Uncategorized

Things got a little dryer around here today. We still have the big pond near the hole, but everything else is drying out. We even managed to get the house lawn cut today. I did some general cleanup and put away all the driveway stuff that was out. The kids helped too. I even started filling the pool back up now that the driveway is done.

I updated the foaling contest and have the due dates for all four mares in there, so now you can start guessing. I also put Roxy and Annie out on grass today to work them up to  full time out with Frosty. We also moved Checkers to a smaller pasture as she really can’t see and when she would get a distance away from another horse she would get scared and search around until she found the other horse.  The small paddock will be much easier for her.

I also started to do some office work with Joe and while I was cleaning out some old emails I found one from Marla of her horse Drew when he was in the mounted police in Madison. It is posted on Youtube. It is from a Skinhead rally at Madison. Look in the background at the beginning for the Appaloosa. That is Drew the horse. They even have face masks on in case of riot. Very cool. Boyd, Marla’s significant other is riding him.

Thanks for watching,
S/B

Good and Bad
Posted by: admin in Uncategorized

Aug 31…..

Today on the other hand was horrible. When I went out to feed I noticed that Luna was not moving at all. I got her into the barn and called the vet. It looks like she might have a virus of some sort. We are not sure what it is yet, but we are treating it as though it might be west nile. She should have immunity from her dam still, but she is really just being old enough to be vaccinated herself, so anything is possible at this point. Penny had a virus years ago, we are not sure which one, and it was winter, but that is also in the back of my head. West Nile is very rare as all of our other horses are vaccinated as are most of the horses around here. There are no cures for these viruses, she will just need to fight it off herself in the end, though we are treating her so that she is more comfortable. The vet will be back out daily until we know what is happening. Once we know what we are dealing with I hope to put her under the camera. Please keep her in your prayers.

Sept. 5th

Well finally I got the streaming camera working on Luna. I ended up also putting one outside today as Luna seemed to be feeling so good I put her back outside with Spanky. Luna tried to kick me a couple times yesterday before I gave her a shot of steroids. The good news is she is obviously feeling better, the bad news is she now realizes that I am giving her shots and she does not like them. I will keep her in again tonight and move the camera back inside on her.

Moses also seems to be feeling better. The cone has stopped all of the licking and the staples seem to be holding. The past two days it has been draining. Enough that we have to keep towels or blankets under him so it doesn’t drip on anything. Until yesterday the fluid was building up and it almost looked like his bump was back but it was fluid. Last night it finally found it’s way out when I took him outside and the clear fluid came running out.

Here is a new video of Spice…
