(CNN) -- Bev Holzrichter, 56, runs a horse stable in Charlotte, Iowa. When she found herself badly injured by one of her horses and unable to move last year, it was Web cam watchers who called for help.

You would be amazed at how many people are interested in watching the foaling season online. We have a live video stream of our stables on all the time.

We've always had cameras in the barn, and decided to put a stream on the Internet in 2000 because so many people want to share the joy of horses giving birth. I get well over a million hits a year and would say several thousand people could be watching at any one time.

My husband is a truck driver so he's seldom at home and on this particular day -- it was a Friday -- he wasn't due back until Monday.

Last year during foaling, one mare called Sierra, seemed to be having a lot of trouble with the birth. I could see on the camera that she was in a lot of pain and she wasn't expelling the after birth.

This normally happens within an hour of giving birth but two hours had passed so I walked into the stables to check on her. I was on a portable phone, talking to a friend, Wendi, who was in California.

I hadn't realized it but another mare, Nifty, had broken down the top half of her door and had gone into Sierra's stable, wanting to steal her baby.

As I entered, Sierra was trying to defend her foal and kicked me three times and knocked me over. I couldn't get back up. Sierra is normally a gentle horse but this was her natural instinct.

In the meantime, people were watching on the Web cam. We have a chat room and a message board on the site too. Wendi got back online and told people in the same state as me to call 911.

People from Germany, the United Kingdom, France -- all over the world had phoned the Charlotte Rescue Squad. When the emergency services arrived 45 minutes later, they were very confused about why they had received calls from all over the world about me.

I don't know what would have happened if it wasn't for the Web cam. I damaged my knee and my leg very badly. My temperature had dropped and I was in body shock by the time help arrived.

The Internet is my hero. We hear so many bad news stories about the Internet and about Web cams but this has such a happy ending.

Those people watching are the ones who helped me. If it wasn't for the technology of the Web cam, I'm not sure when I would have been found or what would have happened to me.

It's not every day that you get rescued by a group of voyeurs that you've never met. But when Bev Holzrichter found herself badly injured and unable to move, it was webcam watchers who saved her life.

Holzrichter, the owner of KB Hilltop Stables in Charlotte, Iowa, was helping a horse give birth when it kicked her, shattering her right leg. Unable to move, and miles from her nearest neighbour, the badly injured Holzrichter was saved by people who had been watching the birth on the stable webcam. Seeing the accident, several people quickly found the number for the Charlotte rescue services and alerted them. 'There were calls from England, Australia and around the world,' she says.

With webcams pointing at everything from horse stables through to city streets and remote volcanoes, there is no end of choice for internet snoopers wanting to watch distant places and events. But, if we were to turn the cameras back on the viewers, who would we see? And why do they watch?

Menschen aus aller Welt konnten den Unfall einer Frau in ihrer Stallung in Iowa live beobachten. Sie sahen, wie die Frau von einer Stute in Panik niedergetrampelt wurde, nachdem sie ihr Fohlen gebar.

Als Bev Holzrichter den Stall betrat, um der Stute nach dem abfohlen zu helfen. Die sonst nicht aggressive Stute geriet aber in Panik und trat um sich, wobei Bev Holzrichter dreimal getroffen wurde.

Sie konnte sich, obwohl schwer verletzt aus dem Stall der Stute schleppen, jedoch nicht die Türe schließen. So bestand die Gefahr, das die Stute herauskommen und nochmals angreifen konnte.

Die Augenzeugen an ihren heimischen Computern reagierten sofort und beorderten Hilfe für Bev Holzrichter. Ohne die Live Zuschaltung via Webcam hätte es Tage gedauert, bis das Unfallopfer gefunden worden wäre, da ihr Mann LKW-Fahrer ist und nur wenige Tage zuhause ist.

Als Unfallschäden wurden bei Bev Holzrichter diagnostiziert: eingeklemmter Nerv, beschädigte Sehne im Knie und ein gerissenes Band am Oberschenkel. Knochenbrüche wurden nicht festgestellt, aber eine Operation steht ihr wahrscheinlich noch bevor.

Der Grund des Ausrastens der sonst nicht bösartigen Stute liegt im Mutterinstinkt begründet, sie wollte nur ihr Neugeborenes schützen, so die Aussage des Unfallopfers zu dem Unfallhergang.

CHARLOTTE, Iowa (AP) -- People around the world watching live on a Web cam as a horse gave birth called for help when the mare - in pain and confused - kicked her owner after delivering her foal.

Bev Holzrichter said she owes her life to people from California to Germany who called for help after witnessing the incident over the Internet, Thursday's Clinton Herald newspaper reported.

"The mare was still in pain and that caused her to become confused," Holzrichter said. "She panicked and kicked me three times on my right side."

Holzrichter said her husband is a truck driver and she is frequently alone at their eastern Iowa stables. She said without the Web cam she could have laid in the barn for days before anyone would find her.

"I managed to drag my self out of the stall, but I couldn't close the door," she said. "So the horse could have finished the job."

No bones were broken, but Holzrichter has a pinched nerve in her elbow, a damaged tendon in her knee and she may have to have surgery on her femur after one of the kicks Friday separated the liner from her leg bone.

"She is not a vicious horse," Holzrichter said. "Like all new mothers, she was very protective of her baby."
