Straw is being put down in Checkers'box, ho hopefully that means that she's expected to foal soon now. 
Hopefully Bill and Susan will be there when she foals.

Checkers walks round and round in her box and she's just done a wee wee, but nothing else yet. I have to work tomorrow, so I'll have to go now.  and  if she decides to foal tonight.

A Wild Hair

Checkers’ filly is colored!  (Well, for most intents and purposes, she’s solid.)  But I was handling her with Nicole last night and there are some wiry, long white hairs sticking out of her hips, and I told Nicole in no uncertain terms DO NOT PULL THEM - they multiply, LOL.  So little girl may end up like Spice, with white hairs throughout her whole body - which isn’t our most favorite coat pattern (the wilder, the better!) but it will be just fine, thank you.   She also has mottled skin and two striped hooves, so we’ve got three out of four Appaloosa characteristics going on.  Speaking of the little gal, she is on a medication (maybe for one more day) to relax her tendons in her front legs.  She is very tall-built, (and more than two weeks overdue!) and her front legs are like posts, kind of over, and too straight from the shoulder on down.  It is easy at this very young age to relax them and allow her the flexibility to grow and move well, so we are doing this.  The medicine for her tendons makes her sleepy, so you will see her being more sedate than her two siblings at a few days of age.  She is fine and will be great - nursing very well, bonded to Checkers really well, and in a day or two we can get her outside to take some pics.

Checkers is content to just hang out with her new baby.

Just right now the vets have bandaged the hindlegs of the filly. She has no problems to get up and down with it.

Catch Me If You Can

Checkers’ big girl is not responding to the tendon-relaxing medicine so we are trying something different - the bandages on her back legs are not corrective, they are just to give support so she can get up and down more confidently, and relax so the tendons can relax. She seems to be doing quite well with them and spent a bit of time in the arena yesterday (and will today also) but we can’t turn them out in a paddock just yet.

Smokey. What she lacks in blanket she makes up for in bloodlines and conformation. Smokey black, and she will have regular papers as she has stripped hooves, mottled skin, and white hairs. She is very laid back and very easy to be around. Checkers is nice and stocky and her foal looks to be that way to. Sired by our Supreme Champion and World's Best Appaloosa stallion Zip Me Impressive.
